Côte d’Ivoire opened its main cocoa marketing season on Tuesday, September 1, alongside the introduction of a mandatory producer card under the country’s national traceability system.
The chip-enabled card is intended to identify farmers, track cocoa from farms to export markets, regulate bean flows and facilitate secure payments. More than one million producers have been registered, with over 900,000 cards distributed.
However, some industry representatives have called for a gradual rollout, warning that farmers who have not received their cards could face difficulties selling their cocoa.
The Coffee and Cocoa Council said the system would help Côte d’Ivoire comply with the European Union’s deforestation regulation, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1. The country is also expected to announce a new farmgate cocoa price for the marketing season.

Families of 32 Kenyan Boeing crash victims to receive $87.3m

Families of 32 Kenyans killed in the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash are set to receive a combined $87.3 million from Boeing-linked compensation funds.
Ribbeck Law Chartered, which represents the families, said final payments would begin following the conclusion of legal proceedings in the United States. The allocation averages about $2.73 million per victim.
The compensation stems from Boeing’s agreements with the US Justice Department over two fatal 737 MAX crashes. A 2025 agreement provided an additional $444.5 million for victims, alongside a $500 million fund established in 2021. Flight 302 crashed near Bishoftu, Ethiopia, on March 10, 2019, about six minutes after leaving Addis Ababa for Nairobi. All 157 passengers and crew from more than 30 countries were killed, with Kenya recording the highest number of victims by nationality.

DR Congo Ebola cases surpass 6,000 as outbreak spreads

Confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo surpassed 6,000 on Monday, as authorities intensified efforts to contain the outbreak.
Health Ministry data showed that 6,041 cases and 2,911 deaths had been recorded since the outbreak was declared in mid-May. At least 1,366 patients have recovered, while 619 remain in isolation or hospital.
The World Health Organisation said the outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, is the world’s second-largest by recorded infections. It has affected 60 health zones across Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Bas-Uele and Tshopo provinces, with Ituri accounting for most cases.
The Government has launched a vaccination campaign for health and frontline workers. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations also announced a $16.5 million partnership with Minapharm Group to develop a vaccine candidate for the Bundibugyo virus.
According to the WHO, insecurity, displacement, a health workers’ strike and significant population movement are fuelling the outbreak. It warned that the crisis remains uncontrolled and could surpass the 2014-2016 West African outbreak, which killed more than 11,000 people.

Ethiopia repatriates nearly 100,000 nationals within 12 months

The Ethiopian government announced on Monday that it had repatriated more than 98,900 nationals facing difficult conditions abroad over the past 12 months.
The Ministry of Women and Social Affairs said the latest phase of the government-led initiative began on Sept. 15 last year. It included the repatriation of 2,463 undocumented Ethiopians from Saudi Arabia last week.
The government and its humanitarian partners are providing returnees with support at temporary facilities, rehabilitation services and assistance to reunite with their families.
Despite public education campaigns about human trafficking, thousands of Ethiopians are reportedly trafficked annually to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, where many work in the informal economy.
Some migrants also face imprisonment and life-threatening journeys across the Red Sea and through war-torn Yemen while attempting to reach Gulf countries.

South Africa’s Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has announced increases in the prices of all fuel products from Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Both 93 and 95 grades of petrol will rise by R1.34 per litre. Diesel containing 0.05% sulphur will increase by R2.93 per litre, while 0.005% sulphur diesel will rise by R3.14.
Wholesale illuminating paraffin will increase by R2.13, while its single maximum national retail price will rise by R2.84. The maximum retail price of liquefied petroleum gas will increase by 69 cents, or 79 cents in the Western Cape.
The department attributed the adjustments to an increase in the average Brent crude oil price from $82.37 to $87.88 during the review period. It cited tensions between the United States and Iran, uncertainty over oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, higher shipping costs, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and reduced global fuel inventories.
Although the rand strengthened against the US dollar, the gains were insufficient to offset international price pressures. A slate levy of 83.28 cents per litre will also take effect on September 2, 2026, after rising from 61.38 cents.

Ghana cuts public-sector financial irregularities by GH¢13bn in 2025

Ghana recorded a 62.9 per cent reduction in public-sector financial irregularities in 2025, exceeding the Government’s 50 per cent target, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko announced on Monday.
Speaking at the 2025 Auditor-General’s Reports Engagement in Accra, Mr Nyarko said irregularities across five sectors fell from about GH¢20.72 billion in 2024 to GH¢7.69 billion in 2025—a reduction of approximately GH¢13.03 billion.
Public boards, corporations and other statutory institutions recorded the largest decline of 87.8 per cent. Irregularities in colleges of education dropped by 95.8 per cent, while those involving the District Assemblies Common Fund and public universities and colleges declined by 39.6 per cent and 51.5 per cent, respectively.
However, irregularities at ministries, departments and agencies increased by 156.3 per cent, while metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies recorded a 125.6 per cent rise.
Mr Nyarko described the increases as unacceptable and directed affected institutions to recover outstanding funds and hold responsible officers accountable under public financial management laws. He said recovery efforts would be monitored and progress reported.
