The recent unrest centers on protests called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane on October 24 and 25, following the announcement of election results, which he has publicly rejected. In response, the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) announced on Monday, October 28, that it has initiated a criminal case against Mondlane and his supporters due to escalating post-election violence across the country.
According to PRM spokesperson Orlando Mudumane, “The PRM has opened a criminal case against citizen Venâncio Mondlane and his supporters for setting fire to a police station and seizing an AK-47 firearm, actions that have caused significant unrest, not only in Moma district but also throughout Nampula province.”
Mondlane’s protests, which he described as peaceful, led to confrontations between police and civilians. In Moma district, Nampula, authorities accuse him and his supporters of being directly involved in the arson attack on the police station and the seizure of a firearm.
At a press briefing, the Mozambican police reiterated their commitment to maintaining public order and security and urged citizens to refrain from engaging in violence or acts of public vandalism.
