Mozambique: Daniel Chapo confirms attendance of today’s meeting with other candidates

The Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) confirmed on November 25 that its candidate, Daniel Chapo, will attend a meeting convened by President Filipe Nyusi on November 26 with the four presidential candidates to address the post-election situation.
President Nyusi’s meeting is scheduled for November 26 at 4:00 p.m. in Maputo, gathering candidates Daniel Chapo, Ossufo Momade, Lutero Simango, and Venâncio Mondlane to discuss Mozambique’s post-election future.
“Daniel Francisco Chapo reaffirms his commitment to promoting political stability by participating in this meeting”, stated Frelimo.
Ossufo Momade, RENAMO’s leader and presidential candidate, also accepted the invitation on the condition that all four candidates be present. RENAMO’s spokesperson, Marcial Macome, emphasized that the meeting’s purpose hinges on universal attendance, suggesting remote participation for security reasons if necessary. RENAMO plans to advocate for the annulment of the October 9 elections, citing irregularities and a lack of fairness and transparency.
Lutero Simango, leader of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), echoed calls for the election’s annulment and confirmed his participation, also contingent on all candidates attending.
Venâncio Mondlane, however, outlined specific conditions, including dropping legal charges against him, releasing detained demonstrators, and guaranteeing political and legal protections for dialogue participants. His demands include restoring fundamental freedoms and addressing legal actions against him, which he claims are politically motivated.
