African Union: Algeria Fails to Win Seat at AU Peace & Security Council

The Algerian regime has suffered another major diplomatic setback at the African Union after failing to gain a seat at the AU Peace & Security Council. This new failure confirms the declining influence of the ruling Algerian junta in Africa and deepens further its international isolation.

On Wednesday, five new members of the PSC were expected to be elected on the sidelines of the 46th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council convening in Addis Ababa. Algeria was hoping to gain a seat at this important AU body replacing Morocco but failed to secure the required majority of the votes despite its intensive lobbying, demonstrating the loss of credibility of the Algerian regime.

New elections will be held next month. Morocco continues to exercise its mandate as member of the PSC. According to press reports, Algerian foreign minister Ahmed Attaf left Addis Ababa after his country suffered a humiliating defeat at the AU Peace & Security Council.

Morocco is serving at this Council since 2018. Throughout its tenure, the North African Kingdom has gained the trust of African countries thanks to its initiative seeking peace and stability for the sake of Africa.
PSC is the standing decision-making organ of the AU for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts. It is a collective security and early warning arrangement intended to facilitate timely and efficient responses to conflict and crisis situations in Africa.
