Gabon’s interim President Brice Oligui Nguema, who celebrated his 50th birthday on Monday, March 3, has confirmed his intention to stand in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for April 12.
Nguema took power in a military coup in 2023, which ended the long reign of his predecessor, Ali Bongo, and his family over the oil-rich but economically struggling nation. His ascent to power came amid a wave of military coups in West and Central Africa, with many hoping it would lead to democratic reforms, although some analysts raised concerns over the junta’s long-term intentions.
Following Nguema’s rise to power, Gabon held a referendum in November, which resulted in the approval of a new constitution. The new charter was presented as a step towards democratic governance, and notably, it did not prevent Nguema from standing for president, unlike other transitional leaders. Addressing his supporters in Libreville, Nguema stated that after careful reflection and in response to widespread calls, he was prepared to run for president in the forthcoming election, declaring, “I am ready to preside over the destiny of our country.”
The announcement comes after the Gabonese Council of Ministers confirmed the election date in January, and it signals a significant moment for the nation’s political future. With Nguema’s decision to run, it remains to be seen how the electoral process will unfold in a country still adjusting to the aftermath of the coup and grappling with questions about its path to democracy.
