
At least 12 people have tragically lost their lives and 45 others have been injured after a bus overturned in South Africa’s northeastern Gauteng Province on Tuesday March 11 morning. The incident occurred on a highway in Ekurhuleni City, near Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, at approximately 6:45 a.m. local time (0445 GMT), according to Andile Mngwevu, a member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport in Ekurhuleni City.
Mngwevu confirmed that 12 people were pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. “Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, and our prayers for a speedy recovery to those who have been taken to various hospitals around the area,” Mngwevu stated. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and it remains unclear whether other vehicles were involved.
Ekurhuleni City Spokesperson Zweli Dlamini provided further details, confirming that the bus was travelling from Katlehong to Kempton Park at the time of the accident. Authorities are still at the scene, working to remove the bodies and manage the aftermath.
