Volkswagen to Launch E-Tractor Manufacturing in Nigeria to Boost Agriculture

Volkswagen has revealed plans to establish a manufacturing plant for electric tractors in Nigeria, marking a significant step towards enhancing agricultural mechanization in the country.
The announcement was made by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, following discussions with Germany’s Minister of State, Katja Keul, at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting last week. Tuggar welcomed the initiative, which is supported by the German government, and emphasized the potential of e-tractors to improve productivity in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
The introduction of e-tractors is part of a broader effort to bolster Nigeria’s agricultural mechanisation and modernise its farming techniques. This move reflects Volkswagen’s renewed confidence in Nigeria’s economy and signals an important shift in the country’s industrial ties with Germany. As part of ongoing collaboration between the two nations, the project aims to foster deeper economic and industrial relations, with a focus on partnerships that strengthen regional security and promote cultural exchanges.
This announcement comes as part of Volkswagen’s broader strategy to expand its presence across Sub-Saharan Africa. The automaker has already piloted similar initiatives in Rwanda, where it has introduced e-powered mechanised farming solutions, including the GenFarm Project. Despite challenges in Nigeria’s automotive sector, Volkswagen’s return to the country, after decades of absence, highlights its commitment to driving sustainable development in Africa’s agricultural and automotive industries.
