The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared on May 20 Egypt to have eradicated all human malaria parasite transmission within its borders, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.
“This certification is in recognition of Egypt’s efforts,” the Ministry added. “This certification reflects the Egyptian state’s commitment to achieving health security for citizens and the success of the national strategy to combat infectious diseases, which is based on scientific foundations, an effective surveillance system, and highly efficient health services,” said Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population.
In keeping with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable development, Abdel Ghaffar underlined that this certification is a powerful motivator to advance in enhancing the health system’s capabilities.
Eliminating malaria, one of the most common diseases spread by mosquitoes, shows a high level of health surveillance and a readiness on the part of the country to stop its recurrence.
