
The African Union has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel and pledged to support regional efforts to combat terrorism and promote sustainable development. Speaking on behalf of AU Chair and Angolan President João Lourenço, Angolan Foreign Minister Tete Antonio delivered this message during a meeting with Malian President Assimi Goita on Tuesday, June 17, evening. Antonio emphasised the need for constructive dialogue and collective action to address the complex challenges facing the region.
During his visit, which also included a stop in Burkina Faso, the AU envoy highlighted the importance of reinforcing African unity and solidarity in addressing shared threats. He reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to supporting the stability and security of Mali and the broader Sahel, underscoring the organisation’s role in advancing peace, resilience, and regional development.
