Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo has revealed that discussions are underway with Portugal to convert sovereign debt into investments in green economy projects.
Speaking in Sevilla during the 4th United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development which ends today, President Chapo highlighted growing openness from Portugal and other EU partners to support such initiatives, which he said would ease budgetary pressures while enabling sustainable development investments.
President Chapo is scheduled to continue the dialogue in Lisbon, where he will meet with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. The proposed agreements centre around debt conversion, climate finance, and carbon credit initiatives aimed at reducing global emissions. While no specific projects have yet been formalised, Chapo expressed optimism that the international community is beginning to take Mozambique’s message seriously.
He emphasised the enduring historical, cultural, and political ties between Mozambique and Portugal, recently reaffirmed during the 50th anniversary of Mozambique’s independence. Chapo stressed the need to consolidate this partnership into new forms of cooperation, particularly in climate resilience, sustainable development, and mutual economic progress.
