South Sudan: Catholic Bishops Call for Peace, Unity, and National Renewal

As South Sudan marked its 14th Independence Day on 9 July 2025, Catholic Bishops across the country issued heartfelt messages urging citizens to embrace the deeper meaning of independence and renew their commitment to nation-building.

Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of Tombura-Yambio reminded the faithful that true freedom lies not just in political autonomy but in reconciliation, service, and a collective mission of healing. Emphasising the theme, “Empowered by Grace, Equipped for Mission, United in Hope,” he called on South Sudanese to rebuild their country with courage and dignity, inspired by divine guidance.

Bishop Alex Lodiong Sakor Eyobo of Yei encouraged South Sudanese to reflect on the struggles that earned them self-determination and to treasure their independence as a sacred gift from God. He expressed concern over the recurring violence and urged unity to silence the guns and focus on rebuilding. Meanwhile, Bishop Christian Carlassare of Bentiu, referencing the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year of Hope, described the independence anniversary as both a celebration of past progress and a beacon of hope for spiritual and national transformation. He stressed the need for healing broken relationships and nurturing a soul renewed by God’s love.

In Wau, Bishop Mathew Remijio Adam echoed similar sentiments, praying that the occasion would be a catalyst for lasting peace and national harmony. He appealed to all citizens to set aside divisions and embrace their shared identity as sons and daughters of one republic. The bishops’ collective messages come at a time when South Sudan continues to grapple with unresolved political tensions and the recent arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar. Despite these challenges, the Church remains a pillar of hope, calling on the nation to forge ahead with faith, unity, and purpose.
