Ghana’s Ministry of Energy has terminated 202 supply contracts of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), valued at over US$227 million, due to non-performance by suppliers. The cancellations are part of a broader effort to address procurement irregularities and enhance the reliability of the country’s power distribution system. Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, made the announcement during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, July 16, noting that the affected suppliers failed to deliver goods within the agreed timelines. In total, 347 contracts were reviewed, with 202 cancelled and the remainder still under assessment. The contract values include £1.17 million and €4.08 million, in addition to the US$227 million.
Mr Jinapor emphasised that the ministry is committed to enforcing procurement discipline and taking corrective actions to sanitise the sector. He assured the public of his full responsibility in ensuring strict adherence to procurement procedures moving forward. To bolster power stability, the ECG has also acquired 200 new critical transformers, aimed at strengthening the distribution network and minimising frequent outages that continue to plague several regions.
