UN Security Council Extends Sanctions on Armed Groups in Central African Republic Until 2026

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted, on July 29, Resolution 2789 on Tuesday, extending for another year the sanctions targeting armed groups and individuals undermining peace in the Central African Republic (CAR). The renewed measures, in effect until 31 July 2026, compel all UN member states to prevent the direct or indirect supply of arms and related materiel to these groups, reinforcing international efforts to stabilise the war-affected nation.
While the arms embargo on the CAR government was lifted in 2023 under Resolution 2745, the Council has maintained its restrictions on non-state actors. The mandate of the panel of experts overseeing the implementation of these sanctions has also been extended to 31 August 2026, ensuring continued monitoring and enforcement of measures such as asset freezes and travel bans against designated individuals and entities.
