Bobi Wine Decries Escalating Repression as Uganda’s 2026 Election Looms

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has warned that the country’s political climate has deteriorated significantly ahead of the 2026 presidential elections.
In an exclusive interview, Wine cited escalating threats from powerful figures, particularly General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, President Museveni’s son and Army chief, who has issued violent threats and is suspected of overseeing abuses against opposition members.
Wine, who garnered 35% of the vote in the disputed 2021 election, accuses the regime of intimidation, unlawful detentions, and suppressing political mobilisation. Despite this, he vows to intensify resistance through a “protest vote,” rallying his supporters amid fears of a deepening authoritarian grip and dynastic succession.
