Sudan: RSF Attack Leaves Village in North Kordofan Devastated

At least seven people, including two children, were killed when Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) ambushed the village of al-Ghabshan al-Maramrah in North Kordofan, a medical group reported on Wednesday, August 20.

The Sudan Doctors Network said 13 others were wounded as RSF fighters looted property, torched homes, and destroyed the community’s only healthcare centre, seizing medical supplies. The assault comes as the RSF seeks to reassert control over the oil-rich Kordofan region, following losses to the Sudanese army earlier this year in Khartoum and Omdurman.

The attack highlights a worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where ongoing fighting between the RSF and the military has displaced millions and pushed parts of the country toward famine. Just last month, RSF fighters killed more than 450 civilians, including children, in a rampage through Shaq al-Num in the same region.

International actors including the United States, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the UN, and the African Union have voiced alarm, urging the warring parties to ensure humanitarian access. Meanwhile, Doctors Without Borders suspended operations at a Central Darfur hospital after an armed assault, underscoring the grave risks faced by civilians and aid workers alike.
