Severe flooding caused by heavy rains in Niger since the start of 2025 has killed 47 people and left 70 others injured, the Directorate General of Civil Protection (DGPC) announced on Wednesday, August 20. Many victims died when their clay-built homes collapsed or from drowning, while the floods have so far affected 7,754 households and resulted in the loss of 257 livestock.
The disaster adds to Niger’s recurring struggle with seasonal rains, which in 2024 left nearly 400 people dead, affected more than 206,000 households, and destroyed over 158,000 homes. Authorities fear this year’s toll could rise further as the rainy season continues, deepening the humanitarian challenges facing the already vulnerable West African nation.
