Malawi’s President-elect Peter Mutharika to Be Sworn In on October 4 After Emphatic Election Victory

Malawi’s President-elect Peter Mutharika and Vice President-elect Jane Ansah are set to be sworn into office on Saturday, 4 October 2025, at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, according to a senior Government official.
Mutharika, who previously served as the country’s fifth president from 2014 to 2020, made a decisive comeback by winning the 16 September presidential election with 3 million votes (56.8%), defeating incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera, who secured nearly 1.8 million votes (33%). Malawi’s Information Ministry announced on Tuesday that several African heads of state and government have been invited to attend the inauguration. The stadium, located in Malawi’s southern city, can host tens of thousands of attendees.
Shadric Namalomba, Mutharika’s spokesperson, confirmed that former presidents Bakili Muluzi and Joyce Banda will be present at the oath-taking ceremony. Mutharika, 85, and Ansah, 69, will assume leadership with a renewed set of pledges, including stabilising the national currency, restoring integrity in public service, creating one million jobs for the youth, investing in energy and infrastructure, strengthening the rule of law, fighting corruption, and improving food security. During his previous presidency, Mutharika was credited with advancing infrastructure and reducing inflation, though his administration faced criticism over alleged cronyism, which he denied. His return to power marks a significant political shift in Malawi’s leadership landscape.
