Ouattara Urges Ivorian Youth to Back His Fourth-Term Bid Amid Opposition Protests

Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara has called on the nation’s youth to turn out in large numbers for the October 25 presidential election, presenting himself as the candidate most dedicated to their welfare.
Addressing thousands at a rally in Abidjan this week-end, the 83-year-old leader pledged to continue creating opportunities for young people through entrepreneurship, education, and employment. The upcoming vote comes as the country faces mounting political tension after key opposition figures, including former President Laurent Gbagbo and ex–Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam, were disqualified from contesting.
Analysts suggest Ouattara remains the frontrunner, particularly after his 2016 constitutional reform removed presidential term limits. However, opposition groups have accused his government of suppressing dissent and manipulating the political process to secure victory. The exclusion of major rivals has sparked protests and mass arrests, heightening concerns about democratic space ahead of the polls. Despite criticism, Ouattara’s supporters insist his continued leadership is essential to maintaining stability and economic progress in one of West Africa’s most dynamic economies.
