On Tuesday, December 9, the Togolese National Assembly adopted the 2026 budget at 2,751.5 billion CFA francs, marking a 14.8% increase over the 2025 budget.
Initially approved by the Council of Ministers at 2,740.5 billion CFA francs, the budget’s upward revision reflects a strong political commitment to navigating Togo’s challenging economic climate.
Minister of Economy and Finance Georges Barcola emphasised that nearly half of the expenditures are dedicated to social inclusion and human capital development, underscoring the budget’s role as a key instrument for implementing national policy.
The Assembly’s decision prioritises funding for economic transformation, digital transition, and agricultural modernisation. Barcola highlighted that €407 billion has been allocated specifically for economic transformation, representing a 29.3% increase compared to previous allocations.
Speaker Sélom Klassou praised the parliamentary debate for its spirit of responsibility and stressed that the vote reaffirms transparency, fairness, and the balance of national institutions, aligning with Togo’s vision of a modern and stable parliamentary system.
The revised budget is designed to serve as a lever for national stability, inclusion, and sustainable economic growth. Following the National Assembly’s approval, the budget will now proceed to the Senate for examination and voting, continuing its parliamentary journey toward enactment.
