Angola Begins Issuing Electronic Passports, Marking Major Upgrade in Travel Security and International Mobility

Angola has begun issuing electronic passports for the first time, a major milestone in the country’s efforts to modernise its migration and identity systems. The authorities presented a sample of the electronic passport during a ceremony held on Tuesday in Luanda.
The move introduces a new generation of travel documents equipped with advanced biometric technology and an electronic chip that securely stores personal and biometric data, significantly reducing the risk of forgery and identity theft.
The e‑passport initiative forms part of broader reforms led by the Interior Ministry and the Migration and Foreigners Service, aligning Angola with international standards for document security and migration control. It is expected to improve border processing efficiency and bolster international cooperation in identity verification.
Issuance will begin in phases, with materials rolled out at key centres including Luanda and Huambo, covering multiple types of passports including ordinary, diplomatic, and those for foreigners. The implementation reflects Angola’s commitment to enhancing citizen mobility and strengthening national credibility within global travel networks.
