Angolan Government Unveils Strategic Investment Plan to Modernise Marinha de Guerra

The Minister of State announced a comprehensive investment initiative aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the Marinha de Guerra Angolana (Angolan Navy), reinforcing national maritime defence and security. The announcement, delivered in Luanda on Monday, outlined a multi-faceted investment strategy designed to accelerate the modernisation of naval assets, enhance operational readiness and support Angola’s broader defence architecture. This push aligns with ongoing efforts by the executive to bolster the tactical and operational performance of the Armed Forces, especially in maritime spaces critical to national interests.

Key elements of the investment thrust include: Acquisition and deployment of new naval vessels, with expectations that Angola will take delivery of its first corvette by year-end, augmenting surface combat capacity. Expansion of naval infrastructure and shipbuilding capacity, with attention on local shipyards such as Lobinave in the Benguela province, to support future construction and maintenance needs.

Sustained financing and modernisation programmes to strengthen surveillance, coastal defence, and response capabilities in response to evolving maritime security challenges. This investment drive complements Angola’s long-term objective of reshaping the navy’s role and effectiveness within the Gulf of Guinea and the wider Atlantic maritime domain, a priority emphasised by senior defence leadership.
