SADC Deploys Emergency Response Team to Mozambique After Floods Affect Over 650,000 People

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) announced on Sunday, January 25, that it has deployed a regional emergency response team to Mozambique following devastating floods that have affected more than 650,000 people.

The multidisciplinary team, comprising specialists in logistics, search and rescue, public health, communications and civil-military coordination, arrived on Saturday and has been integrated into Mozambique’s national humanitarian coordination framework to support relief and recovery efforts.

SADC said the floods have severely damaged roads, schools, health facilities and other critical infrastructure. Gaza Province remains the worst affected, with nearly 392,000 people impacted and four fatalities recorded.

Maputo Province and Maputo City have reported three and one deaths, respectively, while Sofala Province has recorded four deaths, pushing the national death toll to at least 12.
