Ethiopian Airlines Signs Food Waste Recycling Deal to Advance Green Aviation Agenda

Ethiopian Airlines has signed on February 22 a Sustainable Food Waste Recycling Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Provectus Enterprising Inc. and Fusion Global Solutions, marking a significant milestone in its drive towards environmentally responsible aviation.

The agreement seeks to convert food and catering waste generated from the airline’s operations into biomass and other eco-friendly products.

By transforming waste into sustainable resources, the initiative aligns with circular economy principles and is expected to reduce the environmental footprint of in-flight and ground catering services.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Cheryl Urban, a representative of Global Affairs Canada, underscoring the spirit of international collaboration underpinning the project and the shared commitment to advancing sustainable aviation solutions.

With nearly eight decades of operations, Ethiopian Airlines remains Africa’s largest aviation group, serving more than 160 passenger and cargo destinations across five continents. The carrier continues to play a strategic role in linking African markets to the global economy while embedding sustainability into its growth trajectory.

A member of Star Alliance, the airline has earned multiple accolades, including recognition from Skytrax and APEX for service excellence and leadership in African aviation connectivity.

Looking ahead, the airline’s Vision 2035 strategy is designed to position it among the world’s top 20 most competitive aviation groups. A core pillar of that strategy is the expansion of its Pan-African multi-hub network through partnerships with ASKY Airlines, Malawi Airlines and Zambia Airways.

By integrating fleet modernisation, enhanced passenger experience and environmental stewardship, Ethiopian Airlines is reinforcing its leadership in shaping a more sustainable future for African aviation.
