Gabon’s President begins three-day state visit to Angola to deepen strategic cooperation

The President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, will begin a three-day State visit to Angola on Wednesday, May 6, at the invitation of President João Lourenço, with a focus on strengthening bilateral ties.

Upon arrival in Luanda via 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, he will be received by Foreign Affairs Minister Téte António. The first day’s programme includes a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial of Angola’s founding President, António Agostinho Neto, followed by official talks at the Presidential Palace.

Bilateral discussions between the two leaders—initially private and later expanded to delegations—will culminate in the signing of cooperation agreements across multiple sectors, alongside joint press statements. The day will also feature an official luncheon and a visit to the National Assembly.

On Thursday, Oligui Nguema is scheduled to tour the Luanda Refinery, signalling Gabon’s interest in enhancing collaboration in the oil sector. He will also visit the Higher War College of the Angolan Armed Forces and participate in a business Forum at the EPIC SANA Hotel, bringing together investors and economic actors from both countries. The visit concludes on Friday with official farewell ceremonies before his departure.

The trip underscores renewed efforts by both nations to strengthen political, economic and diplomatic cooperation, building on a relationship dating back to 1975.

Existing frameworks, including the General Cooperation Agreement and the Bilateral Joint Commission established in 1982 in Libreville, are expected to gain fresh momentum as both countries pursue economic diversification and deeper regional integration.
