Sundowns Edge AS FAR to Secure Second CAF Champions League Crown

On Sunday, May 24, 2026, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns claimed their second CAF Champions League title after holding Morocco’s AS FAR to a 1-1 draw in Rabat, securing a 2-1 aggregate victory in the final.

Sundowns went into the second leg with a 1-0 advantage from Aubrey Modiba’s winning goal in the first leg last Sunday. AS FAR drew level on aggregate five minutes before half-time when Mohamed Hrimat converted a penalty after Divine Lunga fouled Reda Slim.

However, Teboho Mokoena restored Sundowns’ lead deep into first-half stoppage time with a stunning half-volley, giving the South Africans a crucial away goal advantage.

AS FAR were awarded a second penalty in the 77th minute, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a vital save to deny Hrimat and preserve Sundowns’ lead. The visitors then held firm through eight minutes of added time to lift their first continental title since 2016.

The triumph comes a year after Sundowns lost the final to Egypt’s Pyramids. And earns a record $6 million (£4.49 million) in prize money, along with qualification for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

The victory was achieved just a day after Miguel Cardoso’s side surrendered the South African league title to Orlando Pirates, ending their eight-year domestic dominance.
