Former Senegalese President Macky Sall is set to return to Dakar on 17 July 2026 for his first visit since leaving office three years ago, where he is expected to meet his successor, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
President Sall said the brief visit is part of consultations aimed at securing Senegal’s backing for his candidacy to become Secretary-General of the United Nations. The former President, who led Senegal from 2012 to 2024, is seeking official support from Dakar after the country remained non-committal over his bid.
His candidacy previously failed to secure backing from the African Union after several member states, including Senegal, opposed the move. Dakar had stated that it neither supported nor initiated Sall’s nomination.
The planned meeting between Sall and Faye is being viewed as a significant diplomatic engagement after relations between the former President’s camp and the current Administration became strained over issues including the alleged “hidden debt” scandal and the crackdown on opposition supporters during Sall’s Presidency.
