Ghana to Evacuate Final Batch of 900 Citizens from South Africa Amid Xenophobic Concerns

The Ghanaian Government will begin the evacuation of about 900 citizens from South Africa on 25 July 2026, following requests from nationals who have voluntarily expressed interest in returning home.

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, explained in a video broadcast on Tuesday that the exercise follows previous repatriation efforts that saw about 926 Ghanaians return home after being affected by xenophobic attacks and related challenges that left some stranded in churches, hotels and with relatives.

He said the latest evacuation, approved by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs and border authorities, will involve only individuals who have already registered and undergone screening. Flights will operate daily from 25 July until all approved persons are transported to Ghana.

The High Commissioner stressed that the exercise would be the final phase of the government-sponsored mass repatriation programme, after which assistance will be provided only on a case-by-case basis through consular services. He urged unregistered Ghanaians in South Africa to follow official procedures rather than arriving at the High Commission without prior arrangements.
