Ethiopia has called for increased continental cooperation and stronger implementation of Africa’s security frameworks to address the growing threat of terrorism and violent extremism across the continent.
Speaking at the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC), Ministerial Meeting on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa in Addis Ababa on 21 July 2026, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hadera Abera, warned that global terrorist groups were increasingly threatening peace and security in Africa.
He said extremist groups were exploiting emerging technologies, including digital platforms and social media, to recruit members, spread propaganda and promote radical ideologies.
The State Minister called for the operationalization of the Africa Standby Force and improved implementation of continental security frameworks to strengthen cooperation among African countries in addressing terrorism and governance challenges.
According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hadera also highlighted the country’s efforts to combat domestic terrorism and its contribution to regional initiatives aimed at countering violent extremism.
