Angola’s public debt reaches Kz65.8 trillion in first half of 2026

Angola’s public debt stock reached Kz65.8 trillion by the end of the first half of 2026, equivalent to about US$72 billion, representing 51.24% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to figures presented under the Government’s Annual Debt Plan (PAE).

The data was disclosed on 20 July 2026 during a presentation in Luanda by officials from Angola’s debt management authorities. The increase was mainly attributed to new Eurobond issuances, which contributed to the growth of Government borrowing during the period.

External debt remained the largest component of Angola’s debt portfolio, standing at about Kz46.5 trillion, while domestic debt was estimated at around Kz19.3 trillion.

Authorities said the country’s financing structure has shifted towards longer-term borrowing, reducing reliance on short-term debt and improving Angola’s negotiating position. Key sectors benefiting from financing include transport and energy.

The Government also reported progress in reducing oil-backed debt, with the stock of petroleum-guaranteed financing declining from US$7.37 billion at the end of 2025 to about US$6.83 billion by June 2026.
