Guinea-Bissau’s transitional leader, General Horta N’Tam, travelled to Chad this Monday, marking his first foreign trip since taking power more than eight months ago.
N’Tam’s visit program was not immediately disclosed, but the Chadian Presidency said N’Tam was invited by President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno to attend military parades marking Chad’s independence anniversary.
N’Tam was appointed transitional leader after the military seized power in Guinea-Bissau in late November 2025, following the ousting of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo a day before provisional results of presidential elections were due to be announced.
Guinea-Bissau is scheduled to hold presidential and legislative elections on December 6 as part of efforts to restore civilian rule.
The country will also hold a constitutional referendum on August 30 on proposed changes that would grant the President greater powers. The transitional Charter, published in December 2025, bars N’Tam from contesting the elections.
Meanwhile, a Senegalese delegation appointed by ECOWAS as mediator visited Guinea-Bissau last Thursday to present a new mediation plan aimed at stabilizing the Transition and restoring constitutional order.
