At least 60 people have been killed and 50 others wounded in communal clashes in South Sudan’s Warrap State, local officials said on Monday, August 10, 2026.
The violence occurred on Sunday in Tonj North County, where armed men from neighbouring Unity State’s Mayom County allegedly joined members of the Lou Mawein sub-clan in attacks on the Pan Ariik sub-clan and the Apuk Padoc community in Akop Payam.
Warrap State Minister for Information and Communication William Wol Mayom said 37 members of the Pan Ariik sub-clan, 11 members of Apuk Padoc and 12 people from the attacking side were killed. He said the attackers targeted Pan Ariik cattle camps in coordination with rivals from Alabek and Majak Juer. The circumstances surrounding the clashes remain unclear, and no arrests have been reported.
The latest violence comes days after lawmakers in Juba raised concerns over worsening insecurity in Greater Tonj. On August 5, national lawmakers called for the ministers of interior and defence and the governor of Warrap State to explain the government’s response to the escalating violence.
Bona Malual, head of civil society organizations in Warrap State, condemned the clashes and warned that continued communal violence could undermine peace efforts and preparations for South Sudan’s elections. He urged the government to deploy joint security forces, investigate the killings and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
