The United Nations has condemned deadly communal attacks in Tonj North County, Warrap State, South Sudan, that reportedly killed more than 60 civilians and injured 50 others on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said on Tuesday, August 11, that armed groups carried out near-simultaneous attacks on Alabek and Akook Payams, resulting in widespread displacement and the destruction and looting of property, including the theft of large numbers of cattle.
The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) warned that the violence could trigger further revenge attacks and deepen tensions among communities already facing significant vulnerabilities.
UNMISS said it would deploy a long-duration peacekeeping patrol to the affected areas to assess security conditions, investigate alleged human rights violations and deter further violence through a protective presence.
The mission is also engaging government officials to help de-escalate tensions and has urged authorities to strengthen security and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are held accountable.
