Lake Kariba boat accident death toll rises to 84

The death toll from the boat capsize on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba has risen to 84 after four more bodies were recovered on Sunday afternoon, Police said. Search and rescue operations are continuing as authorities work to locate people still reported missing.

Some of the bodies recovered earlier in the week have been released to families for burial in the Lake Kariba area and other locations. The boat was travelling from Kariba town to Chalala Fishing Camp when it capsized on August 11. Authorities said 77 people have so far been rescued.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the accident a national disaster on Wednesday and directed authorities to provide comprehensive support to affected families, including medical, psychological and funeral assistance.
