Transport was temporarily disrupted along Argwings Kodhek Road in Kilimani on Tuesday, 25 August, after traders protested against the demolition of temporary structures by Nairobi City County officers.
The traders barricaded part of the road with burning tyres and metal structures, leaving vehicles and motorcycles stranded. Some motorists were forced to turn back and use alternative routes as police deployed to restore order.
City officers also arrested several people during the demolition operation near Chaka Place. Reports suggested the traders had occupied the area illegally, although it remained unclear whether they had received prior notice to leave.
The operation forms part of Governor Johnson Sakaja’s intensified campaign against unauthorised kiosks, informal structures and vending activities obstructing public spaces. The county is also developing modern markets in Kasarani, Westlands and South B to accommodate displaced traders.
The disruption coincided with a Kenya National Union of Nurses protest on 25 August over the alleged failure to implement the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreements. Nairobi has witnessed similar demolition exercises in February, March and July 2026, affecting traders in areas including Githurai, Roysambu, Gikomba Market and Uhuru Market.
