Four people, including three civilians and a separatist fighter, have been killed amid renewed violence in Cameroon’s restive English-speaking regions, security sources said on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
Separatist fighters reportedly opened fire on a vehicle travelling along a highway in Ekona in the Southwest Region on Saturday, September 12, killing the driver and two passengers who were travelling to Kumba.
A regional security official said the attackers accused the victims of violating a week-long lockdown imposed by separatists.
Government forces subsequently pursued the fighters, resulting in a confrontation in which one separatist fighter was killed and several others injured, according to the official.
Fighting has intensified across Cameroon’s Northwest and Southwest regions since Monday, September 7, after separatist groups declared the week-long lockdown in an attempt to disrupt the reopening of schools.
Cameroon’s Anglophone conflict has persisted since 2017, with separatist groups fighting government forces in their campaign to establish an independent state in the country’s two predominantly English-speaking regions.
