At least 21 people were killed and four others seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash in South Africa’s Western Cape province, authorities said on Monday, September 14, 2026.
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the accident occurred at about 11:30 pm on Sunday, September 13, 2026, on the N1 highway and involved two minibus taxis and a station wagon.
The collision occurred between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamku, forcing authorities to close the N1 highway in both directions. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes, expect delays and exercise extreme caution while emergency operations continued.
Minibus taxis are a major form of public transport in South Africa, carrying millions of passengers daily to workplaces, schools, towns and provinces, as well as across national borders.
