The Port of Lomé has moved up three places in the 2026 Lloyd’s List ranking of the world’s top 100 container ports, rising from 94th to 91st globally.
The ranking, based on container volumes handled in 2025, marks the sixth consecutive year that the Togolese port has remained among the world’s top 100. Lomé also ranked fifth in Africa, behind Morocco’s Tanger Med, Egypt’s Port Said and Alexandria, and South Africa’s Durban.
Lomé placed ahead of Ghana’s Tema Port, which ranked 94th, and Kenya’s Mombasa Port, which finished 99th. Africa increased its representation in the global ranking to seven Ports in 2026, compared with four in the previous edition. Globally, the top 100 container Ports handled 792.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, representing a 6.3% year-on-year increase.
Director-General of the Port of Lomé, Edem Kokou Tengue, attributed the performance to efforts to establish Lomé as a sub-regional logistics hub. The Port has a depth of 16.60 metres, allowing it to accommodate large deep-draft vessels.
Tengue said the Port would continue investing in infrastructure, digitalisation and service improvements as competition among African Ports intensifies.
Ongoing projects include dredging the Port basin and access channels, particularly around the Lomé Container Terminal, as well as extending the quay to increase vessel reception and cargo-handling capacity.
