Elyes Fakhfakh head of government of Tunisia resigned on July 15. Appointed to this post on 20 January, he headed the coalition government that emerged from last October’s parliamentary elections. While he was the target of a motion of censure in the Assembly, the President of the Republic had asked him to resign a few hours earlier.
This political turnaround illustrates once again the tensions between the Head of State and Ennahda, the first party in Parliament, which has six ministers. The latter, accompanied by Karama and Qalb Tunes, had managed to present a motion to withdraw confidence from Elyes Fakhfakh. In order to keep his hand in the game, the head of state cut them off by asking his protégé to leave the Kasbah.
Charged with a conflict of interest, Elyes Fakhfakh threw in the towel before a possible dismissal, leaving the prerogatives to Carthage, whose tenant, Kaïs Saïed, was elected in October.
State media reports quoted Fakhfakh as saying he hoped his resignation opened up “a new path for a way out of the crisis” for the President
According to Articles 89 and 98 of the Constitution, the President, after consultation with the different parties, will propose within ten days the person best able to lead the future government.
Once the personality has been proposed, he or she will have one month to obtain a vote of confidence from Parliament. Period renewable once. In case of failure, the President could dissolve Parliament and call early parliamentary elections this autumn.
