The cholera outbreak has killed at least 16 people, a public health official told media Tuesday.
Domingos Guiole, an official at Ministry of Public Health Surveillance, told reporters that the country has registered 1,376 cases of cholera.
Guiole indicated that the disease is spreading due to rain falls. Mozambique in May declared cholera outbreak in central Zambezia province. The last cholera case in the province dates back to 2019.
The country announced earlier this month over 500 cases of the disease in the northern Mozambican province of Niassa. Eight people reportedly died.
Authorities suspected that the cases have been imported from Malawi, a country that borders Lago district and which has recorded cases of the disease. Filipe Nyusi, President of Mozambique, called on the population to take more hygienic measures in order to stop the spread of cholera.
