The Angolan government will invest $89 million (83.2 million euros) to build Angola’s National Cloud infrastructure, train technicians, and store and unify government services.
The project, which results from the signing, in December 2021, of a memorandum of understanding between the Government of Angola and the multinational Presight, was presented today in Luanda, at a ceremony attended by the Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Media, Mário de Oliveira.
The minister said that with the implementation of the project, the government intends to promote the digital development of the national economy, a better citizen perception of governance and governmental efficiency, bringing citizens closer to governmental actions, cultivating local talent in the use of ICT (information and communication technologies) and cloud services, as well as establishing a basis for digital transformation throughout Angolan industry.
“This is a unified government cloud built on top of government data centers to provide more than 80 services,” said Mário de Oliveira, noting that the project provides for the migration of existing applications and implementation of new applications to the unified government cloud.
In statements to the press, André Pedro, general director of the National Institute for the Promotion of the Information Society (Infosi), said that the project will be set up within 15 months, and should be completed between February and March 2024.
André Pedro said that the main data center (in Camama) would be built from scratch, and the current secondary data center, the backup near the Telecommunications Institute, would be rehabilitated.
The data centers, which will occupy an area of 5,320 square meters, will house 204 server cabinets, promoting cost reduction in the functional machine of electronic communications of the Government of Angola.
