On November 14, the Guinea-Bissau Government affirmed that it has fulfilled its obligations and that conditions are in place for RTP and RDP Africa to resume broadcasts, which were interrupted nearly ten months ago. Free-to-air broadcasts from the two aluese networks stopped in January, initially due to an alleged equipment issue and later following a fire at the Nhacra transmission center.
Since the interruption, these channels have only been accessible in Guinea-Bissau via cable TV or internet. However, the Guinean Government insists that local infrastructure is not the issue. Minister of Social Communication Florentino Dias told media that the Nhacra transmission center has been “fully restored,” and that the networks “are making the necessary arrangements to resume broadcasts.”
The minister clarified that the timing for the return of broadcasts depends on the Portuguese stations, not the government. “The government has completed its part; the generator at Nhacra has been operational for months, and the center is functional,” he assured.
While some recovery work continues at the center, Dias confirmed it is equipped to support any broadcaster, noting that it already hosts Guinea-Bissau’s national radio and television services. He also highlighted the government’s dedication to improving media infrastructure, citing the recent resolution of a national radio issue that had halted its broadcasts until this week. “The necessary conditions have been created, and national radio has resumed operations,” he concluded.
