In order to improve disease prevention and advance public and animal health, the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) is planning to vaccinate 1.4 million animals by 2025. This was revealed by Sanusi Abubakar, the National Project Coordinator (NPC) of L-PRES, at a five-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop for animal health officers in Abuja. “Biosecurity, Herd Health, Udder Health, and Integrated Pest Control Management” was the theme of the workshop.
Abubakar clarified that the training was a component of the World Bank-backed project’s larger initiatives to improve biosecurity and stop disease outbreaks in the nation’s livestock populations. Participants were selected from the national office and the 20 states where the project was already running, he said. It is anticipated that they will strengthen animal health services by replicating the training locally. Since L-PRES is a World Bank project, it complies with international standards, which is why we are training health officers. Preventing diseases before they arise is essential because we are investing in infrastructure, including veterinary hospitals.
In order to guarantee that the knowledge acquired would be transferred to livestock farmers, also referred to as livestock value chain operators, Abubakar urged the trainees to view the program as a calculated endeavor. A number of important topics are covered in the training, such as integrated pest management, farm biosecurity, udder health management, and general herd health. In line with the value chain priorities of participating states, he emphasized that major efforts were being made under L-PRES to lower livestock morbidity and mortality from disease outbreaks.
