Sudan: Cholera Outbreak Claims 2,408 Lives Amid Ongoing Conflict and Displacement

Sudan’s Ministry of Health has confirmed on Tuesday, 5 August, that at least 21 new cholera-related deaths and 2,345 fresh infections within the past week, bringing the total death toll to 2,408 among 96,681 cases since the outbreak began in August 2024.

The epicentre of the outbreak remains Tawila in North Darfur State, where the health infrastructure has been severely weakened. This escalation further compounds the humanitarian crisis in a nation already crippled by conflict and displacement.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised urgent alarms, revealing that more than 640,000 children under five are acutely vulnerable to violence, hunger, and cholera in North Darfur alone. Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in brutal fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leading to widespread devastation. While the UN and local authorities continue to assess the crisis, academic estimates from US institutions place the conflict-related death toll at approximately 130,000.
