Mauritania’s fisheries sector generated 410 billion Ouguiyas from exports in 2024

Mauritania’s Minister of Fisheries, Maritime and Port Infrastructure, El Vadil Ould Sidaty Ould Ahmed Louly, has announced that fish exports in 2024 generated 41 billion new ouguiyas (410 billion old ouguiyas), with over one million tons exported.

Speaking at a Government press conference this week, the minister said the country’s 2020–2024 maritime fisheries strategy enabled significant achievements, including a total catch of 1.5 million tons and improved financial performance.

The minister highlighted the sector’s social impact, noting that it employs more than 300,000 Mauritanians, contributes to food security, and distributes 55 tons of fish free to the population. He also cited the creation of a strategic stock, investment in aquatic and maritime infrastructure, and strengthened governance as key accomplishments under the strategy.
