Atlas Cubs Roar Past Brazil in U20 World Cup Victory

Fresh off their qualification for the Round of 16 at the U20 World Cup in Chile, Morocco edged out tournament favorites Brazil 2-1 in Santiago on Matchday 2 of Group C, a victory that sparked celebration and confident commentary from the Moroccan camp.

Forward Othmane Maamma said the team was determined to make Moroccans proud, believing they will always have the nation’s support. “We are very happy with the result, and we’re focused on our next game against Mexico, even though we’ve already qualified for the next round.”

Forward Yassine Gessime, named Man of the Match, emphasized the team’s unity. “Even though I received the title, that doesn’t mean I was the only one who performed. We are a united team. Players believed we could achieve this result,” he said, praising the supporters for their continued encouragement.

Mohamed Hamony also expressed his excitement about the qualification, promising that the team would maintain their momentum after taking some well-deserved rest.

For forward Yassir Zabiri, the match was particularly challenging: “It was a really tough game, which is why we’re very satisfied with the result,” he said, adding that the national team will give their all in the upcoming match against Mexico.

The goals for the Atlas Lions were scored by Othmane Maamma (60’) and Yassir Zabiri (76’), while Brazil reduced the deficit from the penalty spot through Iago Teodoro (90’+2).

With this second consecutive victory, following a 2-0 win over Spain, Morocco now tops Group C with 6 points, ahead of Mexico (2 points). Brazil and Spain share the bottom spot with just 1 point each.
