The Federal government of Belgium has joined the long list of countries supporting Autonomy plan offered by Morocco for the Sahara under its sovereignty, saying the plan is “the most adequate, serious, credible and realistic basis to achieve a political solution” to the decades-long conflict.
The supportive stand was voiced by Belgium FM minister Maxime Prévot during a meeting held Thursday in Brussels with Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.
In a joint statement, the Belgian minister has affirmed that his country now act “diplomatically and economically in line with this position”, recognizing the extreme importance of the Sahara for the North African Kingdom.
For his part, Mr. Bourita hailed the significant evolution of the Belgian position, describing it as “clear recognition” of the realist and legitimate vision of King Mohammed V for reaching a definitive settlement of the Sahara regional dispute.
Belgium’s position on the Sahara marks a major diplomatic shift, strengthening further the Moroccan position and confirming the credibility of its autonomy plan, said the minister.
During the past couple of days, Morocco gained the support of Poland and Cambodia for its national cause, while Paris reiterated steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
This momentum comes as the UN Security Council is expected to endorse by end of this October a draft resolution supporting Moroccan autonomy plan as the ONLY feasible solution to the Sahara conflict.
Analysts say the momentum reflects a convergence toward pragmatic approaches prioritizing dialogue, stability, and regional cooperation.
