On 10 November 2025, President João Lourenço affirmed his intention not to contest a third presidential term, emphasising that the existing constitutional limit of two terms remains inviolable. He noted that if the ruling party, MPLA, had sought to extend his tenure, the necessary constitutional amendment could have been implemented during his first term, when the party held a qualified parliamentary majority.
President Lourenço also indicated that his successor should be someone able to serve the country “as well or better” than himself, reinforcing his commitment to transition at the end of his current mandate. By reaffirming his adherence to the constitutional two‑term limit, he sought to dispel speculation about potential constitutional manoeuvres for a prolonged tenure.
