Mozambique has collected over 350 billion meticais (more than US$5.4 billion) in tax revenue since January 2025, the Tax Authority announced on 25 December.
Aníbal Mbalango, president of the authority, highlighted that the results reflect both the resilience of staff and measures aimed at easing taxpayer compliance.
The increase in revenue was driven by strategic actions, including strengthened tax audits and stricter control of Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds. This year, 406,343 new Tax Identification Numbers (NUIT) were issued—388,018 for individuals and 18,325 for businesses—bringing the cumulative total to over seven million.
The Government aims to recover an additional US$1.45 billion in lost tax revenue, as outlined in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, which also proposes the introduction of a digital tax payment system. The plan seeks to modernise the tax system, improve transparency, simplify taxpayer processes, and combat evasion through digitisation.
