Tropical Cyclone Fytia has claimed seven lives and affected over 54,000 people in Madagascar, according to a report by the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) released on Sunday, and updated on February 2.
The storm also caused five injuries, destroyed more than 800 houses, and flooded over 6,000 homes. The hardest-hit areas include Soalala, Marovoay, Mahajanga, and the capital, Antananarivo, located in the northwest of the country. Fytia made landfall on Saturday morning, February 1, 2026, in western
Madagascar, impacting 19 districts, before moving back out to sea on Sunday via Vatomandry on the eastern coast.
Meteorological services have warned of continued heavy rainfall in northern and central-western regions over the coming days, raising concerns about further flooding and disruptions.
