AU urges member States to ratify convention to end violence against women

The African Union has called on member States that have not yet ratified the Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls to take action, as the continent marked International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

In a statement, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said Africa has developed one of the world’s most progressive frameworks for women’s rights, noting that the convention’s entry into force represents a significant milestone in protecting women and girls across the continent.

Youssouf warned that violence against women and girls remains “one of the most pervasive human rights challenges,” stressing that addressing it is not only a moral obligation but also vital for peace, security, public health and sustainable development.

He also acknowledged the contributions of women across the AU, describing their leadership and dedication as central to building a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive continent.

The AU chief further noted that women and girls across Africa often bear the heaviest burden of water collection, exposing them to health and safety risks. He said greater investment in water and sanitation — alongside women’s participation in water governance and natural resource management — would help deliver more inclusive, equitable and sustainable outcomes.
